Democracy thrives on different opinions, diverse perspectives and open debate. To form their own opinions, people need access to a wide range of reliable information.
Yet our public sphere is changing. Digital platforms and artificial intelligence increasingly shape the information that reaches us. At the same time, disinformation and manipulated content make it harder to distinguish reliable information from falsehoods.
This makes professional journalism all the more important. It investigates, verifies facts, provides context, asks questions and takes responsibility for what it publishes.
That is why, for the first time, diverse media organisations in Germany are taking a joint stand through„Democracy needs many voices“: for freedom of the press and broadcasting, media pluralism and an informed democratic public sphere.
Not for individual media organisations. But for something that concerns us all: our democracy.
